Mahāviṣuva Saṅkrānti (Paṇā Saṅkrānti)

Maha Vishuba Sankranti (ମହାବିଷୁବ ସଂକ୍ରାନ୍ତି), widely called Pana Sankranti (ପଣା ସଂକ୍ରାନ୍ତି), is the Odia New Year (ଓଡ଼ିଆ ନବବର୍ଷ), the first day of the solar month of Baisakha.

The day takes its name from pana, a cooling drink of bael (wood apple), jaggery, curd and fruit that is offered to the deities and shared with everyone. Families hang a small pot of water with a hole over the tulasi plant (basundhara theki) so that water drips on it through the hot season.

The new panjika for the year is read, temples are crowded from early morning, and the day closes the festivals of Chaitra such as Danda Nata and Jhamu Jatra.
