The Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Parakala Mutt was founded at Kanchipuram in 1338 by Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Jeeyar, one of the foremost disciples of Swami Vedanta Desika. Inscriptions at the Varadaraja Perumal temple of Kanchi record the Lord's charge to him: to keep the worship of the deity unbroken, to look after the library, and to spread the teaching of Sri Ramanuja.

The worship of the Mutt centres on Sri Lakshmi Hayagriva, the Lord of learning, worshipped by the Acharyas as handed down from Swami Desika. From Kanchi the Mutt came in time to Mysore, where its Acharyas are the gurus of the royal family, and it has branches in Bengaluru, Tirupati, Srirangam, Hyderabad and beyond.

The line of Acharyas has continued without a break for nearly seven hundred years. The present Acharya, the 36th, Srimad Abhinava Vageesha Brahmatantra Swatantra Parakala Maha Desikan, ascended the peetha in 1992.
