About

Poilā Boiśākh (Bāṅlā Nababarṣa)

Poila Boishakh (পয়লা বৈশাখ), also written Pohela Boishakh, is the Bengali New Year (বাংলা নববর্ষ), the first day of the solar month of Boishakh. It is celebrated in West Bengal, Tripura and by Bengalis everywhere.

Traders open new account books in the ritual of Haal Khata, worshipping Ganesha and Lakshmi and inviting customers for sweets. Morning processions (prabhat pheri) sing in the new year, homes are cleaned and decorated with alpana, and people visit temples such as Kalighat and Dakshineswar.

New clothes, a festive meal and the greeting Shubho Noboborsho mark the day.
