Sri Rama Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, observed on Chaitra Shukla Navami -- the ninth and final day of Chaitra Navaratri.

Among all ten incarnations of Vishnu, Rama's is considered the most complete: the purpose of this avatar was not only to defeat the demon Ravana but to demonstrate, through every stage of an ordinary human life, the qualities of an ideal son, brother, husband, king, and friend.

Rama Navami is celebrated across India with fasting through Chaitra Navaratri, recitation of the Ramayana, temple processions, and Sri Sitha Rama Kalyanam (the divine wedding) reenactments -- most famously at Bhadrachalam, where Rama and Sita spent part of their exile.
