About

Sīge Huṇṇime

Seege Hunnime (ಸೀಗೆ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆ) is the full moon of Ashwayuja, a farmers' festival of Karnataka. The crops stand full in the fields, and the earth, Bhoomi Taayi, is honoured like a mother expecting a child.

Families go out to their fields carrying the food of the day: holige, kadubu, chitranna and the season's greens. They worship the standing crop and the Mother Earth, sprinkle cooked food (charaga) over the field as an offering, and sit down together to eat in the open, under the bright Ashwayuja moon.

The same full moon is Sharad Purnima and Kojagiri elsewhere in India, when the moon's light is held to be nectar.
