About

Śārada Navarātri

Śarad Navarātri (the nine sacred nights of autumn) is the most widely celebrated of the four Navarātris, earning the title Mahā Navarātri. It begins on Āśvina Śukla Pratipadā (the first day of the bright fortnight in Āśvina) and culminates on Navamī, followed by Vijayadaśamī (Daśaharā) on the 10th day. For nine nights, the entire subcontinent turns its focus to the Goddess in her nine forms, the Navadurgā, worshipping her through fast, prayer, dance, and spectacular public ceremony.

The nine nights take on dramatically different expressions across India. In Gujarat, Navarātri is synonymous with Garbā and Dāṇḍiyā Rāsa: circular folk dances performed around a central lamp or image of Ambā Mātā, lasting all night for nine nights. In West Bengal and Assam, it is Durgā Pūjā: one of the world's great religious spectacles, with elaborate clay idols of Durgā slaying Mahiṣāsura installed in decorated pandals (temporary shrines) throughout every neighbourhood. In Karnataka, Mysore Dasarā is the royal celebration: a 400-year tradition of elephant processions, illuminated palaces, and Nada Habba (state festival). In South India, Golu (Bommai Kolu) fills homes with tiered displays of dolls and figurines depicting divine stories.

At the heart of Navarātri is the worship of the nine forms of Devī, the Navadurgā. Each day is dedicated to one form: Śailaputrī (mountain daughter), Brahmacāriṇī (the ascetic), Candraghaṇṭā (crescent-adorned), Kūṣmāṇḍā (creator of the cosmic egg), Skandamātā (mother of Kārtikeya), Kātyāyanī (warrior goddess), Kālarātri (the dark night), Mahāgaurī (the radiant white), and Siddhidātrī (bestower of supernatural powers). Devotees fast, offer flowers, and recite the Durgā Saptaśatī: 700 verses in praise of the Goddess.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।
Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṃsthitā, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.
"Salutations, salutations, salutations to that Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of power."

Tradition & Practice
🌺
9 Forms of Durgā
Each of the nine nights is consecrated to one of the Navadurgā: Śailaputrī, Brahmacāriṇī, Candraghaṇṭā, Kūṣmāṇḍā, Skandamātā, Kātyāyanī, Kālarātri, Mahāgaurī, and Siddhidātrī. Devotees worship each form with a specific colour, flower, and food offering, and recite the corresponding chapter of the Durgā Saptaśatī.
💃
Garbā and Dāṇḍiyā Rāsa
In Gujarat and much of North India, Navarātri nights mean Garbā (circular devotional dance around a clay pot lamp) and Dāṇḍiyā Rāsa (energetic stick dances). Both are performed in community grounds for all nine nights, drawing thousands of participants dressed in traditional caniyā colī (women) and kediyu (men) in vibrant colours.
🏮
Bengal's Durgā Pūjā
In West Bengal, Durgā Pūjā transforms the entire state for five days. Elaborate clay idols of the ten-armed Durgā defeating Mahiṣāsura are created by master artisans and installed in decorated community pandals. On Vijayadaśamī, the idols are immersed in rivers and lakes in the emotional visarjana ceremony.
🐘
Mysore Dasarā
Mysore Dasarā (400 years old) is Karnataka's royal Navarātri. For ten days the Mysore Palace is illuminated with 100,000 bulbs every evening. On Vijayadaśamī, a golden throne procession with caparisoned elephants, folk performers, and thousands of soldiers winds through the city in the Jamboo Savari.
🪆
Bommai Kolu
In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala, Golu (Bommai Kolu / Bommala Koluvu) is the tradition of setting up tiered wooden steps covered with cloth, on which hundreds of dolls (gods, goddesses, mythological scenes, village life) are arranged. Families invite neighbours to admire the display; children receive tāmbūlam (betel leaves, turmeric, and gifts).
🌿
Fasting and Vrata Traditions
Navarātri fasting varies by region. Some devotees eat only one meal a day of sābūdānā (tapioca), fruit, and saindhava namak (rock salt). Some fast completely on specific days. The Akhaṇḍa Jyoti (a continuously burning lamp maintained for all nine days) is central to most household observances and must not be extinguished until the vrata is complete.
