About

Sri Jayanti (Munitraya Sampradaya)

Śrī Jayantī is the Munitraya Sampradāya's observance of the birth of Lord Kṛṣṇa, determined by a rule distinct from the more widely followed Smārta and Vaiṣṇava (ISKCON) Janmāṣṭamī calculations. Rather than anchoring to the lunar Bhādrapada month alone, Śrī Jayantī additionally requires the Sun to be in sidereal Siṃha (Leo) at the time: a solar (Saura) condition layered on top of the lunar Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Aṣṭamī tithi and Rohiṇī nakṣatra.

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत। अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्।।
Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata, abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmyaham.
"Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, O Bharata, I manifest myself."
Bhagavad Gita 4.7
Tradition & Practice
☀️
Sun in Siṃha
Śrī Jayantī's defining condition: the Sun must be in sidereal Siṃha (Leo): a Saura (solar) gate the Smārta/Vaiṣṇava Janmāṣṭamī calculations do not apply.
🐄
Aṣṭamī United with Rohiṇī
Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Aṣṭamī tithi must unite with Rohiṇī nakṣatra: at sunrise, through the day and night, or at moonrise, per the Munitraya rule hierarchy.
⚔️
Saptamī & Kṛttikā Vedha
If Saptamī still prevails at Aṣṭamī's dawn, or Kṛttikā still prevails at Rohiṇī's dawn, the day is considered afflicted (vedha) and the rule hierarchy resolves which day to observe.
🪔
When Both Are Afflicted
If both Aṣṭamī and Rohiṇī carry vedha, the Munitraya tradition does not abandon the vrata: Janmāṣṭamī and Śrī Jayantī are observed on two separate, suitable days.
📅
Śrī Jayantī vs Janmāṣṭamī
Both observances usually share the same base Aṣṭamī tithi, so Śrī Jayantī often falls on or near Janmāṣṭamī's date: but the Siṃha and Rohiṇī conditions can shift it to a different day.
