Tulasīdās Jayantī

Tulasīdās Jayantī celebrates the birth anniversary of Gosvāmī Tulasīdās, the poet-saint whose Avadhī retelling of the Rāmāyaṇa, the Rāmacaritamānasa, remains the single most widely read and recited scripture in North India. Tradition places his birth on Śrāvaṇa Śukla Saptamī, the same tithi observed each year as his Jayantī. He is said to have been born already able to speak the name "Rāma," and was given the childhood name Rāmbolā ("the one who says Rām") for it.

Tulasīdās was raised and educated by the sage Narahari Dās at Śūkara-kṣetra (present-day Soron), where he was trained in Sanskrit grammar, the Vedas, and the great epics. He later married Ratnāvalī, and it is a sharp, famous rebuke from her, over his consuming attachment to her rather than to God, that tradition credits with turning him toward renunciation and a life wholly devoted to Rāma. He settled between Kāśī (Vārāṇasī) and Ayodhyā for the rest of his life.

At Citrakūṭa, Tulasīdās is said to have received darśana of Hanumān, who in turn led him to an actual vision of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. It was this direct devotional experience, tradition holds, that gave him the authority and inspiration to compose the Rāmacaritamānasa: not in Sanskrit, the language of scholars, but in Avadhī, the language spoken by ordinary people, so that the story of Rāma could belong to everyone. He began the work at Ayodhyā and completed it at Kāśī. Alongside the Rāmacaritamānasa, he is traditionally credited with the Hanumān Cālīsā, and with other works including the Vinaya Patrikā, Kavitāvalī, Dohāvalī, and Gītāvalī. Some Vaiṣṇava tradition holds Tulasīdās to be a later incarnation of Maharṣi Vālmīki himself, the two great poets of Rāma's story linked across ages.

राम नाम मनि दीप धरु, जीह देहरीं द्वार। तुलसी भीतर बाहेरहुँ, जौं चाहसि उजिआर॥
Rāma nāma mani dīpa dharu, jīha dehariṃ dvāra, Tulasī bhītara bāherahuṃ, jauṃ cāhasi ujiāra.
"Place the jewel-lamp of Rama's name upon the threshold of your tongue, O Tulsi, if you wish for light both within and without."

Born Speaking "Rāma"
Tulasīdās is said to have been born already uttering the name of Rāma, rather than crying as infants do, and was given the childhood name Rāmbolā for it. His birth is traditionally placed on Śrāvaṇa Śukla Saptamī: the very tithi his Jayantī observes each year.

Ratnāvalī's Rebuke
Tulasīdās was married to Ratnāvalī, and deeply attached to her. When he once followed her, uninvited, to her parents' home across a flooded river at night, she rebuked him: if he held even half that devotion for Rāma as he did for her body of flesh and bone, he would have nothing left to fear. The words changed the course of his life.

Darśana at Citrakūṭa
At Citrakūṭa, Tulasīdās is said to have received the darśana of Hanumān in disguise, who then arranged for him to actually see Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa passing on horseback. This direct vision, tradition holds, is what gave him the devotional authority to undertake the Rāmacaritamānasa.
📖
The Rāmacaritamānasa
Rather than writing in Sanskrit, Tulasīdās composed the story of Rāma in Avadhī, the spoken language of ordinary people, so it could be read and sung by everyone, not just scholars. Begun at Ayodhyā and completed at Kāśī, the Rāmacaritamānasa became the most widely read text of North Indian Hinduism.
🙏
The Hanumān Cālīsā
Tulasīdās is traditionally credited with composing the Hanumān Cālīsā, the forty-verse hymn to Hanumān recited daily in homes and temples across the world, alongside other devotional works: the Vinaya Patrikā, Kavitāvalī, Dohāvalī, and Gītāvalī.
📜
A Second Vālmīki
Some Vaiṣṇava tradition holds Tulasīdās to be a later incarnation of Maharṣi Vālmīki, the Ādi Kavi who first told Rāma's story in Sanskrit. Where Vālmīki wrote for the ages in the language of scholars, Tulasīdās retold the same story so it could belong to everyone.
