About

Tulsidas Jayanti

Tulsidas Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Goswami Tulsidas, the poet-saint whose Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana, the Ramcharitmanas, remains the single most widely read and recited scripture in North India. Tradition places his birth on Shravana Shukla Saptami, the same tithi observed each year as his Jayanti. He is said to have been born already able to speak the name "Rama," and was given the childhood name Rambola ("the one who says Ram") for it.

Tulsidas was raised and educated by the sage Narharidas at Sukar-kshetra (present-day Soron), where he was trained in Sanskrit grammar, the Vedas, and the great epics. He later married Ratnavali, and it is a sharp, famous rebuke from her, over his consuming attachment to her rather than to God, that tradition credits with turning him toward renunciation and a life wholly devoted to Rama. He settled between Kashi (Varanasi) and Ayodhya for the rest of his life.

At Chitrakoot, Tulsidas is said to have received darshan of Hanuman, who in turn led him to an actual vision of Rama and Lakshmana. It was this direct devotional experience, tradition holds, that gave him the authority and inspiration to compose the Ramcharitmanas: not in Sanskrit, the language of scholars, but in Awadhi, the language spoken by ordinary people, so that the story of Rama could belong to everyone. He began the work at Ayodhya and completed it at Kashi. Alongside the Ramcharitmanas, he is traditionally credited with the Hanuman Chalisa, and with other works including the Vinaya Patrika, Kavitavali, Dohavali, and Gitavali. Some Vaishnava tradition holds Tulsidas to be a later incarnation of Maharshi Valmiki himself, the two great poets of Rama's story linked across ages.

राम नाम मनि दीप धरु, जीह देहरीं द्वार। तुलसी भीतर बाहेरहुँ, जौं चाहसि उजिआर॥
Rāma nāma mani dīpa dharu, jīha dehariṃ dvāra, Tulasī bhītara bāherahuṃ, jauṃ cāhasi ujiāra.
"Place the jewel-lamp of Rama's name upon the threshold of your tongue, O Tulsi, if you wish for light both within and without."

Tradition & Practice
🗣️
Born Speaking "Rama"
Tulsidas is said to have been born already uttering the name of Rama, rather than crying as infants do, and was given the childhood name Rambola for it. His birth is traditionally placed on Shravana Shukla Saptami: the very tithi his Jayanti observes each year.

Ratnavali's Rebuke
Tulsidas was married to Ratnavali, and deeply attached to her. When he once followed her, uninvited, to her parents' home across a flooded river at night, she rebuked him: if he held even half that devotion for Rama as he did for her body of flesh and bone, he would have nothing left to fear. The words changed the course of his life.
🐒
Darshan at Chitrakoot
At Chitrakoot, Tulsidas is said to have received the darshan of Hanuman in disguise, who then arranged for him to actually see Rama and Lakshmana passing on horseback. This direct vision, tradition holds, is what gave him the devotional authority to undertake the Ramcharitmanas.
📖
The Ramcharitmanas
Rather than writing in Sanskrit, Tulsidas composed the story of Rama in Awadhi, the spoken language of ordinary people, so it could be read and sung by everyone, not just scholars. Begun at Ayodhya and completed at Kashi, the Ramcharitmanas became the most widely read text of North Indian Hinduism.
🙏
The Hanuman Chalisa
Tulsidas is traditionally credited with composing the Hanuman Chalisa, the forty-verse hymn to Hanuman recited daily in homes and temples across the world, alongside other devotional works: the Vinaya Patrika, Kavitavali, Dohavali, and Gitavali.
📜
A Second Valmiki
Some Vaishnava tradition holds Tulsidas to be a later incarnation of Maharshi Valmiki, the Adi Kavi who first told Rama's story in Sanskrit. Where Valmiki wrote for the ages in the language of scholars, Tulsidas retold the same story so it could belong to everyone.
