Perform the Yajnopavita Dharana (thread replacement) on this day regardless, reciting the standard mantra and discarding the old thread -- this keeps daily duties like Sandhyavandanam valid even when the full Upakarma cannot be performed at an auspicious time.
Observe a fast (Upavasa) or Prajapatya Krichchhra as Prayashchitta (penance) for the missed rite, per Nirnayasindhu.
Bathe in a river or sacred water body and offer simple Rishi Tarpana -- this is said to purify the remaining defect.

Upakarma is the annual renewal of the sacred thread (yajnopavita) and the resumption of Vedic study. Each Veda observes it on its own day: Rigveda Upakarma, Yajur Upakarma (Shravani Upakarma, Aavani Avittam) and Samaveda Upakarma.
