Vaikāsi Viśākam 2034
Viśākhā nakṣatra at sunrise in Vṛṣabha: the birth star day of Lord Murugan
Vaikāsi Viśākam
Vaikāsi Viśākam celebrates the birth of Lord Murugan (Kārtikeya, Subrahmaṇya), falling on the day Viśākhā Nakṣatra rules sunrise during the Sun's transit through Vṛṣabha rāśi: the Tamil month of Vaikāsi.
Along with Thai Pūsam and Paṅguni Uttiram, Vaikāsi Viśākam is one of the principal festival days of the Tamil Śaiva Murugan tradition, marking the occasion of his birth to Lord Śiva and Goddess Pārvatī as the commander of the celestial armies, born to destroy the demon Sūrapadman.
The day is celebrated with special abhiṣekams, processions, and festivities at Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu (most notably at Tiruchendūr, Swamimalai, and Palani) as well as at Murugan shrines wherever Tamil communities have settled.
