About

Varalakshmi Vratham

Varalakṣmī Vratam (the vrata of boon-granting Lakṣmī) is observed on the Friday immediately before the full moon of Śrāvaṇa (Śrāvaṇa Pūrṇimā). Vara means boon, and Lakṣmī is the goddess of wealth, auspiciousness, and abundance. On this day, the goddess is worshipped specifically in her most generous form: the one who fulfils wishes and grants the eight forms of wealth (Aṣṭalakṣmī) to devoted women who observe the vrata with sincerity.

The origin of the vrata is told through the story of Cārumatī, a devoted wife in the city of Kuṇḍina. Pleased by her devotion, Goddess Lakṣmī appeared to her in a dream and instructed her to observe the Varalakṣmī Vrata, worship a sacred pot (kalaśa) as her living embodiment, and tie a golden thread around it. Cārumatī shared the instructions with the other women of her city. All who observed the vrata were blessed with prosperity, health, and happiness, and from that time, the tradition spread across South India. The story is told during the vrata pūjā as a kathā (sacred narrative).

Varalakṣmī Vratam is most widely observed in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and among Telugu and Kannada communities worldwide. It is primarily a women's festival: observed by married women (sumaṅgalīs) who fast, perform elaborate kalaśa pūjā, tie a sacred golden thread (called Varalakṣmī), and prepare special naivedyam (food offerings). The pūjā brings the concentrated blessings of all eight forms of Lakṣmī into the home: Dhana (wealth), Dhānya (grain), Dhairya (courage), Gaja (elephants/strength), Santāna (children), Vijaya (victory), Vidyā (knowledge), and Vara (boon-giving).

ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः। वरलक्ष्मी प्रसीद मे।।
Om śrīṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ mahālakṣmyai namaḥ, varalakṣmī prasīda me.
"Om Shrim Hrim Shrim, salutations to Mahalakshmi. O Varalakshmi, be pleased with me."

Tradition & Practice
🏺
Kalaśa Pūjā (Pot Worship)
The central ritual is the consecration of a kalaśa: a copper or clay pot filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and decorated with a face drawn in turmeric and kuṅkum. This pot is treated as the living embodiment of Varalakṣmī. It is placed on a bed of raw rice, decorated with flowers and new saree, and worshipped as the goddess herself.
💤
Story of Cārumatī
Goddess Lakṣmī appeared in a dream to a devoted woman named Cārumatī in the city of Kuṇḍina and said: “Tomorrow is the Friday of Śrāvaṇa: worship me as a kalaśa, tie a golden thread, and I will bless your home.” Cārumatī did so and was immensely blessed. She shared the instructions with other women, and the vrata tradition spread across South India from that day.
🧵
Sacred Thread Tying
A key ritual of Varalakṣmī Vrata is tying a sacred golden or yellow thread (called Varalakṣmī or poonal) around the kalaśa while chanting mantras. After the pūjā, women tie a similar thread around their right wrist as a blessed armour. This thread is worn for several days. The act of tying represents binding Lakṣmī's presence to the home.

Who Celebrates
Varalakṣmī Vrata is primarily observed by married women (sumaṅgalīs) in Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil communities: in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and among diaspora communities in the US, UK, Australia, and Singapore. The pūjā is often done together by groups of women who rotate hosting duties year to year.
✨
Eight Forms of Lakṣmī
Varalakṣmī Vrata invokes all eight Aṣṭalakṣmī: Dhana Lakṣmī (wealth), Dhānya Lakṣmī (grain and food), Dhairya Lakṣmī (courage), Gaja Lakṣmī (strength), Santāna Lakṣmī (children), Vijaya Lakṣmī (victory), Vidyā Lakṣmī (knowledge), and Vara Lakṣmī (boon-granting). Worshipping Varalakṣmī is said to be equivalent to worshipping all eight forms at once.
🍛
Naivedyam (Sacred Food)
The food offerings (naivedyam) prepared for Varalakṣmī are elaborate and festive. Typical offerings include cakra pongali (sweet rice pudding), pulihora (tamarind rice), vaḍā, pāyasam, fruits, coconut, and betel leaves. Women also prepare modakam or kozhukattai. The naivedyam is first offered to the goddess, then shared with invited women as prasāda.
