Āvaṇi Aviṭṭam, the annual renewal of the sacred thread, your city-r bābē
Yajur Upākarma (also known as Śrāvaṇī Upākarma or, in Tamil, Āvani Āviṭṭam) is the annual renewal of the sacred thread (yajñopavīta) observed by Yajurveda-following households, traditionally performed on Śrāvaṇa Pūrṇimā.
The exact date can shift from year to year and from branch to branch of the Yajurveda: Śukla Yajurveda and the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda's Baudhāyana and Āpastamba Sūtras each have their own timing conventions, and the date can move further depending on eclipses, Saṅkrānti, and planetary combustion on the primary day.
The cards above show the computed date for each branch, for your city and year, both for those repeating the observance and for those performing it for the first time. For the full scriptural reasoning behind these dates, see the linked article.
Upākarma Nirṇaya (the determination of the correct date) is genuinely intricate: across the centuries, different sampradāyas and ācāryas have arrived at different rules, and at mypanchang.com we have tried to capture as many of these views as possible here. That is why you may sometimes see more than one date for the same branch. Where they differ, please follow the convention observed by your own family or sampradāya.
