What is Nalla Neram?

Nalla Neram, literally "good time" in Tamil, is a widely followed Tamil tradition for choosing an auspicious window within the day for travel, shopping, signing documents and other everyday undertakings. It is derived directly from the day's Hora table: every Hora segment ruled by one of the four naturally benefic planets, Chandra (Moon), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter) and Shukra (Venus), is treated as a candidate good-time window.

From those candidate windows, whatever overlaps the day's other well known inauspicious periods, repeated daily in a fixed weekday pattern, is removed. What remains is the day's Nalla Neram: one or more short windows, each tied to its ruling planet, considered favorable for starting something new. Because it depends on the day's Hora table, Nalla Neram also shifts with the city's own sunrise and sunset, which is why this page always computes it fresh for your chosen city and date.

Nalla Neram is closely related to Choghadiya and Gowri Panchangam, other regional systems built on the same idea of dividing the day into auspicious and inauspicious segments. See Hora for the full 24-segment planetary hour table this page's good-time windows are drawn from.
