What is Hora?

Hora is a Vedic system that divides each panchang day, from one sunrise to the next, into 24 unequal hours: 12 during the day (sunrise to sunset) and 12 during the night (sunset to next sunrise). Each of these 24 hours is ruled by one of the seven classical planets, Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus) and Shani (Saturn), taken in a fixed repeating sequence that starts from the planet ruling that weekday. The English word "hour" itself descends from "Hora".

Because each Hora segment is ruled by a specific planet, some hours are considered more favorable than others for a given kind of activity. The Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus Horas are generally treated as auspicious (Subha Hora), while the Sun, Mars and Saturn Horas are treated as less favorable for starting new undertakings. Since day and night are each divided into exactly 12 equal parts of the local daylight or night duration, the length of one Hora changes with the seasons and with the city's own sunrise and sunset times, which is why this page always computes it fresh for your chosen city and date rather than using a fixed clock hour.

Hora is one of several traditional Indian time-selection systems alongside Choghadiya and Gowri Panchangam. See Nalla Neram for the Tamil tradition's own good-time windows, which are derived directly from this same Hora table.
